the author and translators
Stephanie
Campbell (née Graham) grew up in Los Angeles in the 1950’s and ‘60’s.
She learned Spanish in the public schools, starting in the 6th
grade. As an undergraduate she
spent two months in Brazil and six months in Chile in 1972-73.
She received her B.A. in Spanish Literature and Latin American Studies
from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an M.A. in Spanish Literature
from the University of California, San Diego.
During an eighteen-year career she has taught ESL and Spanish for Native
Speakers at Belmont High School in Los Angeles, and Spanish at Ruben S. Ayala
High School in Chino Hills, California. She
has presented on these stories for CLTA (California Language Teachers
Association) and other organizations. She
is an active member of IEFLA (Inland Empire Foreign Language Association) and
subscriber to FLTEACH, a listserve on the internet for foreign language
teachers.
About the translators
Beverly
Dandurand has an M.A. in Spanish with a minor in French.
She teaches Spanish and French at Boulder City High School in Nevada.
She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama.
Among her extensive travels, she lived for two summers in Dijon, France,
and 10 months in Mauritius, teaching ESL in the fishing village of Flic and Flac
(where students speak Creole, Indian dialects and French in their homes, but are
tested in English). Bev says, “I
never met a veggie or fruit I didn’t like.”
Sonia Kopyto Brandon was born in London to a French mother and a Polish father. She grew up in Lightwater, Surrey, England, speaking French and English. She was a national-level tennis player who came to the U.S. to play tennis on the team at Mississippi State University. There she made President’s Scholar every year and met her husband. She received her BSc in International Business, French and Spanish. A few years later she earned an M.A. in French and Spanish. She spent a semester at the Universidad de San Juan, Costa Rica. She taught French and Spanish in public schools in Mississippi and Virginia. Currently she lives with husband William Shayne and dog Champ in Bybee, Virginia, where she teaches French and Spanish and coaches orienteering and tennis at Fork Union Military Academy, in addition to teaching French part-time at a local community college! She is an active member of AATF and FLAVA (Foreign Language Association of Virginia) and subscriber to FLTEACH.
